9 Lessons From Our Hiring Process

Well, it is finally over and I am so glad! Of course, now the hard work begins! I am referring to the hiring process I have been going through over the past 90 days. While I have not discussed much detail, I have alluded to this process in several posts. Now that it is over, I want to share some of what I have learned.

Lesson #1 – Trust God.

This hiring process began for me at the first of June when a key leader in our organization let me know he had been given an opportunity that he simply could not decline. While I instantly knew that my workload had just increased dramatically, I also knew it would only be for a season.

For some reason, God had been preparing me for this very eventuality. As a result, I did not panic. For the first time in a long time, I really trusted – right from the start – that God would take me through to a better place. As a result of this trust, my stress level really never increased throughout the process. I was truly amazed by this!

Lesson #2 – Begin with Prayer.

Well, I did not immediately start by looking for a replacement. Instead, I began praying that God would reveal to me His structure. I prayed that God would take a blank slate and put His picture of our organization on it. I was prepared for His picture to look very different or exactly the same. I was prepared for anything in between.

I can honestly say, I was prepared for whatever He showed me! I can also say that I have not prayed for any other decision as much as I prayed about this one. I was determined that He was going to show me the way. I was not going to choose it for myself.

Lesson #3 – Seek Godly Advice.

In addition to prayer, I began to seek advice from those I knew and trusted to give godly advice. I sought this advice from my C12 group, other Christian dealers in my industry, and various other advisers I know personally. Quite simply, I did not try to handle this hiring process alone.

As a result of prayer and the advice we received, the decision was made to seek to hire a COO for the organization. This was to be a step of faith as this position has not existed in our organization before. Even so, when we looked at all of the pieces, it made the most sense.

Lesson #4 – Cast a Wide Net.

We began by running ads in a national trade magazine and online. I reached out to those contacts I knew would possibly know of a candidate and asked them for help. I also continued praying!

We were overwhelmed with the number of applications. Even though we included the description, “Christian automotive group” in the ad, we had over 70 applications submitted. This may not be many for some of you, but it was a mountain in my eyes.

Lesson #5 – Set Clear Guidelines (and Don’t Waiver).

It takes more than gut instinct to successfully filter 70+ applications down to a manageable number. Based on the scope of the job, we worked hard to come up with a list of several requirements that we used to evaluate resumes. While there were several applicants that I identified with, they did not make the cut unless they met the qualifications. There were several hard decisions, but I pressed through it. The first round of filtering by these guidelines brought our number down to 12 solid candidates.

From there, we had each candidate complete a behavior and motivator assessment. Again, due to the specific nature of the job, we had a clear picture of the type of personality that would be successful in this role. This picture was compiled from the input of several current key leaders in our organization. This avoided any single perspective driving biased results.

Lesson #6 – Turn Up The Heat

Once we had narrowed the candidates to the final three, the hiring process got more intense. We started with a phone interview of each candidate. This interview was conducted by a close friend and adviser who also happens to be an industry expert. He followed a script of a number of questions that were posed to each of the three candidates. He took notes on the answers that we reviewed together after each interview.

At this point, we each called several references on each candidate. Fortunately, one of us knew someone on each of the reference lists. It always helps to know the person giving the reference so you have a better feel for their perspective.

With good reports from the references, I then interviewed each of these three candidates via Skype. This gave me the opportunity to see facial expressions and gestures. I could gauge their stress in response to certain questions as well. Just like the phone interviews, I followed a set of questions that I posed to each candidate.

While the intent was to select one of the three candidates to bring to the dealership in person, we were unable to narrow it down beyond two candidates. So, we brought both candidates to town to go through the remainder of the hiring process. We scheduled them to come in back-to-back (two days each) over a four day period.

Lesson #7 – Involve Your Team

Each candidate arrived in town the day before the interviews would take place at the dealership. That evening, they went to dinner with me and my brother, our spouses, and the friend/adviser that conducted the phone interviews. At dinner, we got to see how they would interact with others. We also were able to get a very different perspective from our wives! This proved to be very helpful.

The next morning, each candidate had breakfast with two members of our executive leadership team. Then they went through a series of interviews with management teams from each department. They were also interviewed by a mixed group of front-line employees. This part of the hiring process, an idea from another adviser, was priceless! I would not trade it for anything!

Lesson #8 – Can You Work With Them?

For the last couple of hours before they were scheduled to depart, the candidates answered some tough questions, ate lunch with us, and answered more tough questions on a variety of issues. At this point, the candidates had been vetted and were both capable of filling the position. It really boiled down to which was a better cultural fit with our team. Which one would we enjoy working with more? Which one seemed like they would enjoy working with us?

Lesson #9 – Pray Some More

At the end of the entire hiring process, we were all clear on the candidate we thought would be the best fit. It was not an easy process and both candidates were highly qualified, but we felt the right one had come to the surface. At this point, I decided to wait one more day.

I prayed in depth that God would make it clear to us who we should choose. Although we had prayed all through the process, I was determined to make absolutely sure that our decision came from God, not from our own preferences or biases. I wanted Him to give me a peace about moving forward.

Hiring Process Result

The final result was that we made an offer of employment to one of the candidates. He accepted with excitement and started at the first of the month. Like I said in the beginning, there is now a lot of work ahead of us! At the same time, I trust that God will guide us through this new season.

What you would do differently?

Mistakes Are No Excuse To Break Your Word!

Have you ever given your word to help someone with a need on a specific day and time, only to be invited later to some incredible event at the same time? Have you ever agreed to sell something at a price BEFORE you found out you had additional costs you had not considered? These situations can come up regularly in life and business. The question is whether making a mistake is a valid excuse for breaking your word.

Joshua’s Mistake

As we continue our study of the story of the Gibeonite deception, this same issue occurs for Joshua. In fact, it really occurs twice in a very short period of time. Let’s take a look at what happened to him and how we can apply it to our own Christian business leadership.

As we read in Joshua 9:1-10:15, the Gibeonites deceived Joshua and the Israelites into agreeing to a peace treaty with them. The Gibeonites actually lived within the boundaries of the Promised Land and were therefore sentenced by God to be destroyed by the Israelite army. Because they tricked Joshua into thinking they were from a distant land, they were given the peace treaty they sought. Joshua’s mistake was in not seeking God’s guidance first.

But They Lied!

The problem is that three days later, the Israelites somehow found out that they had been tricked. It became crystal clear that the Gibeonites had lied about where they lived. They even admitted it to the Israelites when confronted about it.

So, if that is the case, what stopped Joshua from ordering the Israelite army to attack the Gibeonite city? Why did Joshua and the other Israelite leaders decide to let them live? Wasn’t it still true that God had ordered them to destroy all people groups inside the Promised Land boundaries?

Sworn Oath

While that was still true, Joshua and the Israelite leaders knew that they were now bound by their oath. Mistake or not – they had sworn an oath, by the Lord, that there would be peace between them and the Gibeonites. These leaders knew a truth that we need to remember and apply in our own businesses.

Mistakes do not give you the right to break your word!

If you continue to read, you will see that the whole community of Israelites grumbled against the leaders for this decision. If left up to the crowd, they would have attacked and claimed that the oath of peace was based on deceit and was therefore invalid.

God’s Perspective

Unfortunately, God does not see it the same way as the Israelite community. Take a look at 2 Samuel 21:1-14 and see what happens many years later when David was king. There had been a famine for three years and David inquired of God as to why.

God answered that it was because King Saul had killed some Gibeonites and violated the oath made by the Israelites. Generations later, God still remembered the oath to the Gibeonites and was holding Israel accountable to that oath!

Joshua Understood God

Fortunately for the Israelites following Joshua, he understood this about God. He knew that his oath was valid, regardless of his mistake and the circumstances leading up to it. As a result he and the Israelite leaders honored their word to the Gibeonites and did not allow the Israelites to attack.

Another Level!

If the story ended here, it would be noteworthy. Instead, Joshua showed us another level of leadership that we can aspire to imitate. At the beginning of Joshua 10, we read that five kings and their armies went to attack the Gibeonites. Quickly, the Gibeonites sent word to Joshua, asking for help based on their treaty!

Surely, the deceptive Gibeonites did not actually expect Joshua to put the lives of his men at risk by coming to their defense against the five armies. Isn’t that asking a little much?

Evidently, Joshua did not see it that way. He immediately gathered the Israelite army to come to their defense. Not only that, but he also had his army march all night in order to catch the other armies by surprise!

God’s Reaction

What did God think of his actions? Well, we read that God reassured Joshua, telling him that He had already handed the other armies over to him. Then, during the actual battle, we read that God threw hailstones on the five armies as they fled! More soldiers died from the hailstones than from the Israelite swords!

If that is not confirmation that Joshua made the right decision, then I do not know what is!

Our Application

Folks, this lesson has direct application in our businesses. Whether we have given our word to a customer, an employee, or even a vendor, we are bound by that word. If we later find out that we made a mistake or were deceived, we are not excused from our word.

The lesson here is that we need to do our best to move slowly when it comes to giving our word to someone. We need to buck the trend in society today that says your word is only good as long as it is convenient for you to keep it. Look at failed marriages, businesses, mortgages, etc. and see that too many people simply see their word to be more a matter of convenience rather than binding.

Higher Standard

As Christian business owners and leaders, we are called to a higher standard. Before you give your word to someone, make sure you have prayed for wisdom and guidance in the decision. Then, once you have given your word, live by it. Keep your word even when you have made a mistake and it causes you loss. Follow Joshua’s example.

Anger Is Inevitable – Is It Sin?

Just over a week ago, I posted Don’t Do These 7 Things When You Are Angry. In a comment/question, Kari Scare asked what we ARE supposed to do when we are angry. Because she is a successful writer and blogger at Struggle To Victory, I asked her to guest post for me on the answer to her own question! The following is her guest post on anger management. Anger is Inevitable, But Not Sin

Anger is inevitable. This is especially true the more we interact with others, such as daily at work or with our families at home. Even Jesus got angry (Matthew 21:12-13), and the Old Testament provides many references to God’s anger.

Anger is not a sin; the key is to avoid sinning when angry. Having a plan for when anger hits not only provides a way to avoid sin, but it also allows for self-control to increase as we choose to not “give full vent” to our anger (Proverbs 29:11). The Bible also indicates that we must also control or limit (Ecclesiastes 7:9 and Proverbs 14:17) and even get rid of our anger (Colossians 3:8, Ephesians 4:31-32).

I remember a time in my life when my temper easily flared, and I was known for being somewhat volatile. If God hadn’t taught me how to control and even how to eliminate anger, I would have continued believing this was simply “the way that I am” with no hope for change. Yet, He did work in my life in this way.

5 Steps To Control & Prevent Anger

The following 5 suggestions for how to control and prevent anger stem directly from that struggle:

1. Keep from getting angry in the first place.

    Sort of a preventative maintenance approach, avoiding getting angry seems difficult when the response comes so naturally. Yet, this can be achieved by staying grounded in the Word and by keeping short accounts with other and with God.

    In other words, deal with issues while they are still small. The bigger a conflict becomes, the more overwhelming it feels, and the more likely anger will rise up.

2. Deal with root cause issues.

    Usually, anger stems from a deep-seeded issue that an individual has failed to deal with and overcome. Anger also often results from feeling a lack of control over circumstances. Coming to terms with and understanding those issues can help curb and even eliminate angry outbursts.

3. Realize you don’t know the whole story.

    When another person feeds your anger by their attitudes, actions or words, try to remember that when others treat you wrong, it’s usually more (if not totally) about them and not about you.

    You may never know the root cause of their behavior, but you can avoid letting it negatively impact yours. Chances are you don’t know the whole story, so err on the side of grace when dealing with others.

4. Be aware not only of words spoken but the tone used.

    Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” A gentle answer often includes saying less, but always includes a tone that calms and soothes rather than agitates and fuels the fire.

    Personally, I find that gentle answers come more easily the more I listen. So, the less I speak and the more I seek to understand, the more gentle my words become.

5. Get and use wisdom.

    The Bible instructs says “discretion” makes a man “slow to anger” and better able to overlook hurts from others (Proverbs 19:11). Discretion means “the power or right to decide or act according to one’s own judgment.” Acting based on sound judgment means thinking before acting or speaking, and the result is that anger automatically subsides.

    Having wisdom means listening more and truly hearing what others say. It means avoiding those who struggle controlling their anger or who seem to provoke you easily. Wisdom means knowing when to walk away, to stay well-rested, and to avoid those blood-sugar highs and lows that make emotions difficult to manage. Pursue wisdom, and anger will begin to subside.

Don’t Just Eliminate Bad Habits..?

Whenever we eliminate bad habits, only getting rid of the negative creates a weak defense. When the opportunity presents itself to employ that habit, not having an alternative can spell certain disaster. God has a way of testing us in areas in which we are trying to mature and grow, which is helpful since that’s really the only way we’ll grow.

To properly prepare for this future challenge, the negative must be replaced with positive. In other words, simply getting rid of my anger and bad temper was not enough. I needed to replace it with another “go to” response. But what response?

The Bible’s Answer!

We find the answer in Colossians 3:8 & 12, which tell us to “put aside anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language” and to replace them with “compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” As the fruit of the Spirit increase in our lives, their counterparts will naturally decrease. Avoid having an empty house that will be “worse than the first” if left untended (Luke 11:24-26).

Today, I can happily say that anger no longer controls me. While I do get angry once in a while, the above lessons serve to prevent and often eliminate anger, and suggestions such as those found in Don’t Do These 7 Things When You Are Angry help keep me from sinning when I am angry. No, my score is still not 100% in controlling my anger, but it sure improves as I deliberately and intentionally employ the instruction the Bible gives for managing anger.

Crisis – An Advisory Board In Action

advisory boardAs Christian business owners and leaders, we are virtually guaranteed to face a crisis in the course of doing business. In fact, the odds are we will face more than one.

Are You Prepared?

Depending on your experience, you may or not be prepared for it when it hits. If it is big enough, even your years of experience may not help. This is where the combined godly wisdom of a good advisory board is critical.

Advisory Board in Action

In a recent C12 advisory board meeting, one of the members shared the crisis he is currently facing in his business. His crisis was actually a conglomeration of several difficult issues involving family, business, and faith. To protect the innocent, I will not go into details!

The Crisis Defined

I will tell you that in all my years of business, I have not faced anything like this business owner is facing. It quickly became clear in the group that the same was true for the rest of the members. This situation was a doozy and had more hair on it than Bigfoot! Quite simply, there was no clear and easy solution.

It took the member 30-45 minutes to finally get all of the pertinent facts onto the table because he was so distraught over the situation. He bounced from issue to issue, trying to describe all the details. We were asking clarifying questions the whole time because he was so scattered in his thoughts and words. It was a painful effort just getting a clear picture of the whole situation.

Action Plan Established

From there, it was amazing to watch the minds of eight godly, Christian business owners jump into action. In a flurry of more questions, debate, and brainstorming, our advisory board group came up with a solid action plan for the member to execute.

Here are some of the advisory board contributions:

    1. Detailed the timeline for his action plan.

    2. Debated the best approach to each step of the plan.

    3. Outlined possible break downs in the plan and how to respond to them.

    4. Discussed the potential pitfalls to shortcutting various steps in the plan.

    5. Gave advice relating to legal issues he will need to further investigate.

    6. Tested our recommendations against Scripture throughout the process.

    7. Questioned him on various decisions he had made up to this point.

    8. Gave him contact info for key people that could meet various needs.

    9. Prayed over him and the whole situation – asking for wisdom, peace, strength, mercy, forgiveness, peace, and reconciliation for all parties involved.

Now Fully Prepared

At the end of the meeting, it was clear that the member was in better spirits and fully equipped to face the crisis head on. While, the tough time was still in front of him, he knew he was on the right path and had a solid game plan. He also knew that we would continue to pray for him through the process. That does a lot for one’s confidence.

Advisory Board Structure

I encourage you to contact C12 if you are interested in visiting a group meeting to get a feel for how it works. Of course, the C12 Advisory Board structure is not the only way to accomplish this process. In my conversation with Mark Cress a couple of weeks ago, he explained how his advisory board consisted of a unique blend of personalities and experience. This board is the actual Board of Directors for Corporate Chaplains of America (CCA).

Though there are some significant differences in the responsibilities of his board when compared to the C12 advisory board, the benefits discussed in this post are the same. An example of this is how the CCA board has played a critical role in creating Mark’s succession plan over the next several years. Their combined wisdom will ensure a smooth transition of leadership over CCA, as well as position the organization for significant growth in the future.

You Need An Advisory Board

The bottom line is that regardless of the size of your business, you need an advisory board. There are too many potential problems you could face that will require more wisdom and experience than you have. Whether you seek a paid advisory board or one that volunteers their time, you cannot afford to go it alone.

Consider these verses from Proverbs as your encouragement to get started:

Without guidance, people fall, but with many counselors there is deliverance.
-Proverbs 11:14

Plans fail when there is no counsel, but with many advisors they succeed.
-Proverbs 15:22

Finalize plans with counsel, and wage war with sound guidance.
-Proverbs 20:18

…wage war with sound guidance – victory comes with many counselors.
-Proverbs 24:6

Life-long Learner

You see, I have been a life-long learner. I love learning new facts and ideas. I enjoy learning about big concepts as well as trivial tidbits. I just get a kick of any kind of learning.

Books

Since I have always been taught that a leader is a reader, I have always sought out the next greatest book to teach me what I need to know. Over the years, I have found some really good books and I have indeed learned a lot from them. In fact, I have created a whole page on this website dedicated to my recommended Reading List. Many of the books on this list have had significant impacts on my life. I would not give up having read any of them.

Other Leaders

I have also been taught to look to those who are smarter than me and have more experience than I do and to learn from them. I have learned from my parents, coaches, other business leaders, and even people I have never met through blogs, conferences, and webinars. I am always looking to meet people that can teach me something!

But, regardless of all of the combined learning from all of the above sources, none compares to the resource I am about to reveal to you. If I could somehow measure everything I have learned from these sources, that total would hardly register when compared to what can be learned from the one resource I about to share with you.

#1 Free Resource

Enough of the build-up, already. The #1 free resource for Christian business leaders is godly wisdom, or as James puts it, wisdom from above. Let’s take a look at what wisdom really is, as defined by Webster:

    -deep understanding, keen discernment, and capacity for sound judgment
    -ability to discern inner qualities and relationships

If we could all have our fill of the above definition of wisdom, do you really think we would need a whole lot more? There is so much that we encounter from day to day in our businesses, families, and other interactions that would go so much smoother if we were filled with this wisdom. Can you imagine the impact we could have if we could relive some of our missed opportunities, but this time be armed with godly wisdom?

Value vs. Cost

I can tell you this…I will take all of it I can get. I have seen the results in those situations where my wisdom from above kept me from making a decision I am sure I would later regret. I have also seen the results when I failed to employ godly wisdom. I do not need to be convinced of the value it holds.

So, what does this godly wisdom cost us? Do we have to live for 80 years before we can experience it? Do we have to be able to afford a higher education to gain it?

No, no, no! It is free for the asking! Take a look at this:

Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith without doubting. For the doubter is like the surging sea, driven and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. An indecisive man is unstable in all his ways. – James 3:5-8

All we have to do is ask God and have faith that He will do what He says He will do. It is really that simple!

Give it a try. For the next 90 days, pray earnestly that God will give you wisdom and have the faith that He will answer that prayer. God is faithful. I guarantee you will notice a difference! What do you have to lose?

Prayer In The Strategic Plan For Ministry

A new friend of mine asked me a simple question in his comment on my final post in my Strategic Plan for Ministry series. His question was simple, but convicting! My friend, Loren Pinilis (see his blog here), asked me how prayer enters the process of this planning. While this seems like an innocent enough question, it actually is a very penetrating question!

prayerI wish I could say that I had planned to address that separately or that I just assumed everyone knew that prayer was a continuous part of the process and therefore did not include it. Or I could be bold and say I was trying to draw someone in to ask that very question!

Confession

The problem is that none of these excuses are true. The simple truth is that I forgot! In a six-post series on being intentional about doing ministry in the course of doing business for the purpose of pointing people to God, I actually forgot to include anything about seeking God for guidance in the process! I left out the very One who knows all there is to know about ministry, business, and people. Are you kidding me?

Of course, now that I have done this, I have the perfect post material! How often do we do this exact thing? We plan, we strive, and we sweat the details of our efforts in every facet of our lives, but we often completely forget to seek His guidance ahead of time. Most often, we ask Him to bless our efforts once we have decided what we are going to do! This is insanity!

Why do we always seem to wait until we have run into an obstacle or crisis before we call out in prayer?

We are children of the Creator of the universe. He is all-knowing, all-present, and all-powerful. He wants to equip us “with all that is good to do His will” (Heb. 13:20-21). All we have to do is ask! There is nothing that exists that is not available to Him to use to accomplish His will (Psalm 24:1). So why do we so often forget (or refuse) to go to Him in advance? Why do we always seem to wait until we have run into an obstacle or crisis before we call out in prayer?

Role of Prayer

Whatever the answer, let’s take a look at how we should pray when preparing our strategic plan for ministry in and through our business.

Mission Statement

As we discussed, the mission statement tells why we exist as a company. If this statement is to be used for direction, to make decisions, and to inspire us, it only makes sense that God should guide us in developing it. Our prayer should seek guidance from Him on our direction (Proverbs 3:5-6). Trying to do this on our own, without seeking Him in prayer, could lead to wasted time and failed plans.

Mission Field

The mission field is effectively our target audience. We need to pray for a couple of things here. First, we need to ask God to identify those groups of people He wants us to minister to. Second, we should be praying that He will give us the right words and actions for effective ministry to these people. Finally we should ask Him to prepare their hearts to hear what He will say to them through our words and actions. (Colossians 4:3-4)

Brainstorm

As the Creator of everything we see (Colossians 1:16), don’t you think God is more creative than anyone else we know? As we go into our brainstorm session to gather ideas for ministry activities, we need to ask Him to expand our minds and spark our imagination so that we can come up with those ideas that will be the most effective in pointing others to Him.

Action Plans

Next, we need to pray for wisdom in choosing and prioritizing the best ideas from the brainstorm session. We also need to pray that God would lead us in laying out the action plans (Proverbs 16:9) and that He would grant success in these plans as well (Proverbs 16:3).

Accountability

Finally, we come to measurement and accountability for our plans. Because we will reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7), I believe we need to ask God for more wisdom. We need wisdom in determining what to measure and how to establish good accountability. Because ministry results are so hard to measure, we need to be especially careful here. This another area that could cause us significant trouble if were to do it on our own.

After the Exit Interview, Now What?

In my last post, Ten Reasons for an Exit Interview (with Purpose), I described why you should always execute an exit interview with departing employees.  So, you did the exit interview and got some feedback.  What are you supposed to do now?

First of all, you may actually receive positive feedback from the departing employee!  Don’t be shocked!  If you are doing some things right, be excited and appreciative for the compliments.  However, for the sake of this discussion, let’s focus on the not-so-positive feedback.  What do you do with that?

  • Do nothing at all.

    I am just kidding!  (Just out of curiosity, did you find that to be ridiculous advice in this context?)  Unfortunately, that is exactly what most people do with this information.  If they even complete an exit interview at all, it is most likely done to complete a checklist of termination paperwork.  Then the potentially valuable information is discarded as unworthy of their time!  Or maybe the feedback was painful and difficult to face head-on.  Regardless of the reasons, this is NOT a recommended step to take!  Read on…

  • Validate the feedback.

    Sometimes you will simply get sour grapes from a disgruntled employee.  While this is sometimes true, it is a mistake to assume it will always be that way.  Take what you heard, sift through the emotions (yours and theirs!), and find the nuggets.  If you have not observed the issues yourself, consult other employees that you know to be objective.  Get their perspective.  Simply put, do your homework and find out if there is validity to what you heard.  Pray for wisdom and discernment as you do this!

  • Determine if there is a pattern.

    What if you find the issue(s) to be true?  Okay, so something went wrong or a part of your business did not meet your standards.  Maybe you received negative feedback about you or your style.  What next?  Find out if it was a one-time problem or, more likely, a pattern.  Is it the result of a broken process or an isolated personality conflict?  Don’t gloss this over.  Dig through the rubble or smoke and determine the root.  If it is an isolated situation, move on to the next issue.  If it is a pattern, read on…

  • Find the best solution(s) and correct the problem.

    While this sounds simple, it is too often left undone.  Even if you remained objective through this whole exit interview process, it is possible that remaining employees may not.  They may be holding the sour grapes!  Whatever the situation, if the issue you have uncovered is legitimate, you need to push through to correct it and make sure it does not reappear.

  • Follow up with the ex-employee – thank them!

    Why not?  Do not allow pride or busyness keep you from thanking them for their productive feedback.  Let them know of your appreciation as well as your efforts to take action.  You do not have to go into detail about what you found.  Just let them know that their words did not fall on deaf ears.  They will appreciate it and you will be blessed as a result.

  • Commit to 100% execution of exit interviews in the future!

    Assuming you followed the whole process from beginning to end, then you can see the benefits of completing exit interviews with every departing employee.  If your company is too big for you to do them personally, then assign the responsibility to someone else, but make sure they grasp the value of the process.  Communicate to them the importance you place on the feedback.  Set up the process to make sure there is accountability in its execution!
